Saskatchewan Trappers Association "The Voice of Saskatchewan's Organized Trappers" |
| 1. Public Education:
We have
an educational kit of tanned pelts from every commercially harvested
furbearer
in the Province of Saskatchewan.
This kit is taken to schools, Cub and Scout groups, shopping malls, wildlife functions, sports and leisure shows and othe rpublic functions for display. During the display we identify the various species, and describe their life and habitat, humane traps and trapping methods, as well as answer questions pertaining to fur management and marketing. We point out the potential results of trapping bans to both the animals and the public in general. There is no charge for this
program but
we do ask for donations, of possible, to cover some of the expenses.
2. Annual Convention: This is held yearly, usually during the winter months. Trappers and friends meet to hear reports of our discussions with Government and Industry, approve the Financial Report for the previous year and present any resolutions they feel may improve trapping and fur related issues. Not all the Convention is
business.
There are dealers on hand with a complete stock of trapping
supplies.
There are on-going skinning and pelting deomonstrations by both
industry
representatives and other trappers. Fur Auction representatives
bring
pelts and show reasons for the various grades so as to inform the
trapper
and improve his prices through better pelt handling.
3. Annual Rendezvous: Held in July usually, this event is a fun time plus educational for trappers, families, and friends. Various trap sets are demonstrated by working trappers. Some skinning and pelt preparation is also done. Contests for trappers are also held. Trappers camp out or stay at a nearby town. Fun and fellowship is the key here!
4. Trapper Education: Trained members of the S.T.A. will conduct courses (when practical) for first time trappers wishing to obtain their first license. We also encourage young trappers by sponsoring competitions for trappers under 16 years old. These include small trap setting, skinning, and pelt preparation. We also provide instruction on humane trap sets.
